Citizen Police Academy

What is the Citizen Police Academy?

The Royse City Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy is a 10-week block of instruction designed to give the public a working knowledge of the Royse City Police Department’s personnel and policies. It consists of a series of classes held once each week for two hours. The instruction is comprehensive, covering a different area of the department each week. Officers, Supervisors, and other personnel assigned to that particular division conduct each instructional block.  

When is the Citizen Police Academy?

The Royse City Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy will be held twice a year. There will be one 10-week class in the spring, and one 10-week class in the fall. Specific dates will be published to the public in advance of each upcoming class. 

Who may attend?

 The class is made up of a cross section of the Royse City community. The minimum age for admission is 18 and you must live or work in the Royse City city limits. Applicants must have no felony convictions.  

The Purpose

The Royse City CPA was created in order to provide enough information to the citizens that attend so that they may make informed judgments about the police department and police activity. It is hoped that the instruction will increase police awareness, dispel suspicion and misconceptions, and increase police-community rapport. The department, in turn, becomes more aware of the feelings and concerns of the community. It is indeed a two-way learning experience. 

Topics

The Royse City CPA covers diverse topics to include: patrol tactics, DWI procedures, traffic enforcement, accident investigations, criminal investigations, crime scene, and firearms. Instructional techniques utilized include lecture, hands-on demonstrations, and tours.
